Background of the Study
School feeding programs have emerged as a critical intervention to address child malnutrition and improve educational outcomes in developing regions. In Sokoto State, where poverty and food insecurity are prevalent, these programs aim to provide nutritious meals to schoolchildren, thereby enhancing their cognitive development, concentration, and overall health. Research has shown that regular access to nutritious food can significantly reduce rates of malnutrition and improve academic performance (Aliyu, 2023; Mustapha, 2024). Despite these promising findings, the effectiveness of school feeding programs in Sokoto State remains under-evaluated. Variability in program implementation, meal quality, and funding challenges may limit their potential impact. This study will assess the effectiveness of school feeding programs by examining nutritional outcomes, attendance records, and academic performance among participating children. A mixed-methods approach will be employed, incorporating quantitative nutritional assessments and qualitative interviews with students, parents, and program administrators, to provide a holistic evaluation of these programs.
Statement of the Problem
In Sokoto State, school feeding programs are implemented to combat child malnutrition and support educational achievement; however, their effectiveness is not uniformly observed. Many schools struggle with inconsistent meal quality, supply chain disruptions, and inadequate monitoring, leading to suboptimal nutritional outcomes for students. This situation undermines the potential benefits of the programs, as children may continue to experience malnutrition and related health issues despite regular meal provision. Furthermore, limited data on program performance makes it difficult to identify gaps and implement necessary improvements. This study aims to address these issues by evaluating the effectiveness of school feeding programs on child nutrition and academic performance, thereby informing policy and operational enhancements that can maximize the benefits for students in Sokoto State.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the nutritional impact of school feeding programs on children’s health.
2. To assess the relationship between school feeding, attendance, and academic performance.
3. To recommend strategies for improving program effectiveness and sustainability.
Research Questions
1. What is the nutritional status of children participating in school feeding programs in Sokoto State?
2. How does participation in these programs affect school attendance and academic outcomes?
3. What improvements can be made to enhance the impact of school feeding programs?
Research Hypotheses
1. Participation in school feeding programs is associated with improved nutritional status among children.
2. Enhanced nutrition from school meals positively correlates with higher attendance and better academic performance.
3. Program improvements in meal quality and consistency will further enhance nutritional and educational outcomes.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will target primary schools in selected rural and urban areas of Sokoto State. Data will be collected through nutritional assessments, academic records, and interviews. Limitations include potential variability in program implementation and reliance on self-reported dietary information.
